Mastodon: an open source social network

Hi,
yesterday a collegue tweeted something about a “new” federated open source social network that is somehow similar to twitter. It’s called mastodon.

I remember that the very first Bad Voltage episode had a segment about open source social networks, so I guessed this new player might interest some of you guys.
Any thoughts or opinions?

Or does anyone even already have an account? If so, please connect with me, I created mine only yesterday. It’s [email protected]

For some reason, it exploded in France in the last few days. I’ve seen an article in Le Monde about it, and famous French associations promoting Net neutrality, open source software and the like in France such as Framasoft and La Quadrature du Net are already providing instances to register an account (respectively Framapiaf and Mamot).

I’m https://mastodon.social/@sil if you’re into Mastodon and want to follow

Yes it seems that now is the time where they get their 15 minutes of fame…I hope it will last a bit longer though

Wohoo! :tada:
We are mastodon-buddies now (does that sound weird?)

By the way, does anyone know if there is something like a commented retweet in mastodon? Or maybe a practice that can be used for that.
I mean, I found a nice toot, and want to boost it (see, I already know the words  )
but of course I must stick my oar in as well when I do this.

I tried “reply”, but I can’t even see the connection to the original toot and my reply…does anyone know what i’m missing?
(edit: found the “connection” now…one just needs to click on “expland this status” )

LIke Twitter’s “quote tweet”? No, there isn’t. This is, I believe, an explicit policy by mastodon to limit abuse.
