3x53: Representative but not Shining

Stuart Langridge, Jono Bacon, and Jeremy Garcia present Bad Voltage for the last time in 2022, in which we take a look back at our predictions for this year and review how we did. Surprisingly… not as badly as last year. Although as you may expect there is shameless jockeying for extra points. How did you do by comparison?

We’ll see you in 2023!

You asked for ideas for topics for a Mastodon discussion. I’d be interested to hear what you think needs to change for it to grow to anywhere near the scale of Twitter.

Profit motive!

Seriously though, I do recall that something like only 10% of Twitter users (maybe less) were responsable for 90% of the content (maybe more). The rest of us just use Twitter to see what those users are posting. So those users need to adopt Mastadon (or otherwise join the Fediverse, since the source and destination don’t need to be the same software as long as they talk the same language: ActivityPub).

They need to understand that joining the fediverse means setting up their own instance because no one is going to verify who you are (like Twitter did) but we’re going to trust toots coming for your domain (like we trust emails from our bank’s domain to be from our bank but emails from gmail proporting to be from our bank to be spam).

And the fediverse needs to accept these corporations/celebrities/etc without zealously defederating everyone isn’t singing kumbaya.
