Stuart Langridge, Jono Bacon, and Jeremy Garcia present Bad Voltage, in which everyone’s middle name is Elaine, there is discussion of the nature of business in the modern age, and:
[00:02:45] We look at Brave, a privacy-focused web browser. They've got some interesting technical choices, but more importantly we want to look at the question of their business model. How do Brave propose to remain sustainable? How are they making money now? And once they get the cash... what are they doing with it?
ah, slightly different thing. This isn’t about circumventing a paywall, per se (I’m not sure how I feel about that, but I think I’m mostly against it); it’s about reading an article which in theory I’m able to read OK but in practice is festooned with deceptive cookie warnings, popup ads, popover ads, moving video, and the like. Such places get their JavaScript turned off. If they’ve made reading the article dependent on having JS turned on then I don’t get to read it in those situations, but that’s pretty highly correlated with it not having been worth it to do so in the first place.
Ahh, different use-case indeed. Just get frustrated with google news serving paywalled articles where I have only a passing interest in reading it. Would prefer the option not to see paywalled articles in Google News but then - that’s Google’s revenue stream, and also unfortunately the revenue stream for the original site.
