The Missouri story reminds me of one of my first jobs. Our clients were unable to restore from backup after a disaster, so we were on the phone forever with the vendor’s technical support. On a whim, while they were trying to explain that this was sophisticated work and it could take a long time for a solution, I started investigating the file, itself, and blurted out “wait, is this backup just a TAR file?”

The other end of the conference call went dead for a while, and then a panicked voice came on to ask “who told you that?” I mean, clearly, I was a diabolical industrial spy, and not a developer who finally remembered that the file command exists.
