2x61: Frankly Much Smarter

Stuart Langridge, Jono Bacon, and Jeremy Garcia present Bad Voltage, in which a tenth of a point is more important than one might think it is, Mother Shipton is turning in her grave, and:

  • [00:02:10] A year ago we predicted everything that would happen in technology in 2019. Now... we revisit those predictions and see how we did. No spoilers, but we will say: when we return in 2020 and give new predictions for the upcoming year... we'll probably do better. In advance of us doing so in the New Year, why not hop over to community.badvoltage.org to tell us what you think will happen?
  • [00:50:30] And it's goodbye from us for 2019! With some brief diversions into Craigslist getting its first official app after 24 years and a brief check in on the Ubports Ubuntu phone project

The idea of having a vote to see if @sil or @jonobacon won sounds like a bad idea to me they don’t always go well.

Some of you may have noted I have moved recently. Given the UK election results last night this explains why.

I’m moving to Scotland

Some sales numbers on the fold:

Today at TechCrunch Disrupt Berlin, Samsung Electronic’s President Young Sohn revealed the company had sold 1 million foldable Galaxy Fold smartphones. Estimates from October pegged sales at that time at 500,000 units.
“And I think that the point is, we’re selling [a] million of these products,” Sohn said. “There’s a million people that want to use this product at $2,000.”

Well I will be voting for Jono (for anything, really) because Stuart called the Librem 5 not a real phone. Yes, sometimes I’m a petty, petty woman :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

It’s fine to keep up the pretense that your predictions can be rated on some objective scale, but come on the whole point of the predictions show is for you all to haggle and argue over the details. If the goal was to get the most predictions right, you would all make safe, boring predictions. But the point is to make the most entertaining show.

Congrats @jonobacon to your win at predicting 2019!
I felt that you really deserve it!

My prediction for 2020: assuming that the three of you will take care to predict 2020 all with the same handycap, I think 2020 will be back to normal, i.e. Jono will come out last

2020 Predictions:

  1. The combined IBM-Red hat- etc. companies will be renamed “Red Hat”.

  2. Chrome OS will make major inroads to corporate environments. 10-15% of enterprise users will migrate from Microsoft to google.

  3. Cheryl Sandberg will become CEO of linuxquestions.org.

Regarding Deep fakes:

There was a Deep Fake video in the UK elections which went viral. But in fact is was an action from the artist Bill Posters, so it may technically not count…

Damned hyenas!

And my 2020 prediction: Google will integrate RCS into Hangouts and release it world wide until some one at MS, FB, or Apple complains to some European commission until Google is forced to offer you the choice of messenger when you first activate your phone thereby once again ruining whatever slim chance we had for Google to finally get it’s messengering in order!
